Project Overview
The IKO Industries Ltd facility in Alconbury, UK, is a large-scale insulation manufacturing facility covering approximately 272,000 sq ft (25,300 m²).
For an industrial manufacturing facility of this scale, accurate representation of structural, piping, mechanical, and plant systems is critical for technical coordination and reliable project documentation.
OneClick BIM was engaged by DMD to develop a detailed Stage 500 Plant 3D BIM model incorporating P&ID information. The resulting model provided a coordinated digital representation of the facility's core plant systems and supported model-based drawing production.
OneClick BIM's Scope
OneClick BIM was responsible for developing the Stage 500 Plant 3D BIM model and extracting coordinated drawings from the completed model.
The project scope included:
• Stage 500 BIM Modelling
• Plant 3D Modelling
• P&ID Integration
• Structural Modelling
• Piping System Development
• Mechanical Unit Modelling
• Plant System Coordination
• Coordinated Drawing Extraction
• Model-Based Documentation
The model was developed to maintain consistency between the P&ID information, 3D plant model, and project documentation.
Key Challenge
The primary challenge was managing the technical complexity of a large industrial manufacturing facility where structural, piping, and mechanical systems needed to be accurately represented and coordinated.
The integration of detailed P&ID information also required consistency between system data, the 3D model, and the resulting drawings.
OneClick BIM addressed this through a structured Plant 3D modelling workflow, developing the facility's systems within a coordinated digital environment and maintaining clear relationships between the plant model, P&ID information, and project documentation.
OneClick BIM's Workflow
Project Information & P&ID Review
Available P&ID information, system inputs and discipline-specific references were reviewed to establish the modelling requirements and project structure.
Plant 3D Model Development
The facility's structural elements, piping networks, mechanical units and related plant systems were developed within Plant 3D.
System Coordination
Model elements were coordinated to maintain consistency between the P&ID information, plant systems and 3D representation.
Model Quality Review
The developed model was reviewed for consistency, system relationships and documentation requirements.
Drawing Extraction
Coordinated drawings were extracted directly from the BIM model, providing the project team with model-based technical documentation.
Final BIM Delivery
OneClick BIM delivered a detailed Stage 500 Plant 3D BIM model for the IKO Industries manufacturing facility, incorporating P&ID information alongside structural, piping, mechanical and plant system modelling.
Coordinated drawings were extracted directly from the completed model, providing the project team with a consistent set of model-based documentation for review, coordination and planning.
